Well, the refurb Dell Optiplex GX270 arrived on Tuesday. I’ve been “at it” ever since. First was to check under the hood. It’s a horizontal desktop, and easily opens by pushing two buttons on the sides of the case. Four ram slots, with four 256Mb cards. Harumph! I can better that. This thing uses the same ram sticks as the defunct old Dell B110. So, pop the side-plate off that, and out come two one GB sticks. Only a minute to make the swaps.Connected everything, and powered it up, and bingo! it works. Exxxcccelllnt. Now it has two Gb plus 512Mb of installed RAM. Then started the grind of updating the OS-(Win XP Pro-SP2). That done, it was time to start rebuilding the system. Install, install, install. Ho-hum. Hours and hours of dinking around.
One of the very first installs was a backup program: EasyUS Todo Free. It was used to make a backup of the clean system before anything else was added. Once all that drudgery was done, the inner hacker came out. The thought fomented: “The hard-drive in the B110 still works. There’s room for it in this new case…hmmmmm…” But, that’s another story. With pictures.
